Which Cost To Pay?

Occasionally a sentence stops me in my tracks.

“There is a cost to silence and a cost to using your voice, and every day I wake up and decide which bill I’m going to pay.”

Easy to see the investment involved in speaking up and getting involved. Might be time, or money, or social standing. Takes intentionality and courage to make that kind of investment.

Harder, perhaps, to see the cost when we choose to turn away. Perhaps we’re enabling continued child sex trafficking or substance abuse. Different issues for everyone, but the principle remains.

I don’t consciously consider this important choice each day. I probably should, because by default I pay the cost of silence.

I’m not sure it’s worth the price.
