Did yesterday’s quote nudge you a bit?
I’m not a pastor or a Bible nerd. I’ve said many times, it’s not my job to tell others how to follow Jesus. And I have no idea if the numbers in that quote are precise.
But I do know the Bible talks much more about being a servant than about being a leader. I know that on the night before he died, Jesus didn’t sit on a throne – he washed dirty, smelly feet. He told his followers the last would be first in his kingdom.
This notion didn’t occur randomly to me. Last Saturday, nearly 275 people showed up to serve 22 kids rescued from human trafficking. Nobody was there seeking recognition or praise. The entire day was dedicated to loving kids we will never meet.
Folks stood on a street corner for an hour or more to make sure riders made the correct turn. They danced, rattled cowbells, and transformed what might have been a lonely station into a fun interaction with the riders who passed. Service.
People showed up at 5 AM to make sure everything was ready. Set up tents. Brewed coffee and cooked pancakes. Arranged chairs and tables. I watched most of it and was astonished at the joy and laughter. No griping about the early morning, only “what needs to be done?”
Everyone benefited from the results, but no one saw their efforts. They didn’t care. Service.
I could go on and on. Honestly, I’m likely not aware of everything people did to make this day amazing. I’m not aware, because they cared about the kids and did what was needed.
I’ve said it again and again:
There’s no limit to what a group of committed, passionate people can accomplish when they work together and trust Jesus for the outcome.
