About Leadership

Last time we talked about service.

At last week’s FREEDOM TOUR CLASSIC, a few people indicated I was some sort of leader. I’ve spent a good deal of time pondering that notion.

I understand the need for leadership, and for better or worse that’s probably part of my role. But Jesus was very clear – “servant” is the preferred position in his kingdom. So how does one provide necessary leadership while maintaining the attitude of a servant?

There’s a term that’s often talked about more than practiced – SERVANT LEADER.

During the last few years of my teaching career, I felt extremely settled in my classroom. Jesus finally helped me realize my highest purpose was to serve every student.

I also understood they required guidance. My job was to present the material in an engaging manner, offering them the best opportunity to learn and grow.

I mentored the teacher who replaced me in my classroom. She’s remarkable and has gone far beyond anything I accomplished. That’s the point.

It was never about turning my classroom into a monument. It was about creating an environment that encouraged the next group of students and teachers to do amazing work.

The Freedom Tour offers a similar opportunity.

It’s important to tell the origin story, the 1500-mile Mississippi River ride, the God-sized dream that gave birth to the Freedom Tour. It’s important because those stories inspire and encourage.

But this thing is about a community. My purpose is service, and a part of that service is guidance and direction.

I’m about to complete my 75th trip around the sun. Next year will be the 15th Freedom Tour. Whatever happens next, this needs to be clear: This isn’t about me.

It’s about creating a community where the next group can do something even more remarkable.
