Doing What We Know

I ran across a short passage this morning that sort of stopped me in my tracks.

All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

It stopped me not because it contains radically new information, but because it seems to me so packed with simple, important reminders.

One principle stood out to me.

Only let us live up to what we have already attained.

It’s pretty easy to get immersed in a cycle of study, study, study, and to decide I’ll start doing stuff once I know enough. But as my friend Jon wrote recently, we know what the Bible says.

You and I know what Jesus said.

Of course we should keep studying, digging deeper. But Paul is telling us here that we can’t use what we don’t know as an excuse to skip out on what we do know.

My goal, with the time I have left, is to make sure everything around the freedom tour reflects what I understand about Jesus. It’s not enough to just look the part. The cross on our jersey sleeve ought to be more than a fashion statement.

Act justly. Love mercy. Walk humbly.

Do what we know.
