65 Miles

I did something unusual on our COLORADO MOUNTAIN TOUR – I rode my bike.

If that sounds odd, riding a bike on a bike tour, remember I ride a handcycle and it’s a MOUNTAIN tour. But my teammates convinced me to give it a shot.

I ended up riding only a single day due to spotty rain showers, but what a glorious day!

Our team pedaled from Gunnison along the beautiful Taylor River to Taylor Park Reservoir and back. 65 gorgeous miles with 2,593 feet of climbing tossed in.

The night before the ride, I confessed my fear to the team. Fear of the ride itself, for sure, but also fear of asking for extra help getting on/off my bike and the thousand little tasks I can’t do myself. Of course they reassured me, claimed their eagerness to assist, stated how much it would mean to have me on the road with them.

The ride was remarkable. The community, the connection, was beyond what I hoped for.

Someone asked me if I regretted missing the other days. I said no, because we made good choices based on conditions and because that first ride was so spectacular.

However, I do have one small regret.

When I got back to Gunnison and my odometer said “65 miles” it would have been relatively easy to crank 3 miles out and back and make it a 71-mile day. That’s my age, and riding one’s age is a thing for cyclists of a certain age.

Becky did a CENTURY – 100 miles – last Friday. She completed 1,000 miles and more than 50,000 feet of climbing in the month of July.

I’m going to do that 71-mile ride.

Why?

Because the kids at the Home of Hope still need our support, and every mile is matched $1-per-mile in the HOPE & FREEDOM CHALLENGE.

You can still join us. Walk, run, or cycle…you can count miles from Jan 1 if you want to help us reach our team’s 60,000-mile goal.

SIGN UP HERE. We’ll send a link to our web-based app and you’ll bring hope and freedom to kids rescued from human trafficking.

What could be better than that?
