Making A Difference

Our last tour reminded me that I’m a starfish guy.

You’ve heard the starfish story. A person sees a guy tossing starfish into the ocean. “What are you doing?”

“Well, the tide strands all these guys on the beach. I’m helping, throwing them back so they don’t die.”

“But there’s millions of them. How can throwing a few back make any difference?”

The man reaches down, picks up a starfish, and watches it splash into the waves.

“Well, it sure made a difference to that one.”

I’m a starfish guy. As a classroom teacher, I believed in making a difference one student at a time. On our tour, I realized I’ve lost a bit of my identity.

I’ve started obsessing about millions of kids, getting depressed about lack of progress because the numbers don’t change.

22 kids. 3 girls graduated and moved on to college. Destinies changed.

Starfish.

I think Jesus is a starfish guy. He sees and cares for us one-at-a-time.

He died for me and you and that lady over there, not for everyone as a big group.
