When It Might Be Time To Stop Praying

According to the author of Ecclesiastes (and Pete Seeger), “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”

Everything? I ask because an email from my friend Kari suggested it might be time to stop praying.

She got my attention.

Kari hasn’t lost her faith or her desire to be in continuous conversation with God.  She still believes in the power of prayer to impact hearts and change lives. So what’s up with her provocative subject line?

Kari doesn’t really want anyone to stop praying. As always, there’s more to the story. Her real message was:

Stop Praying. Start Doing.

We kind of like this sentence at the FREEDOM TOUR:

There’s no limit to what a group of committed, passionate people can accomplish when they work together and trust God for the outcome.

“Trust God for the outcome.” That’s the prayer part. We know we do nothing by ourselves. We acknowledge our desire to walk with and lean on Jesus throughout the journey.

But it IS a journey…that’s the “work together” part. We’re supposed to be Jesus’ hands and feet–and wheels and keyboards and whatever tools we happen to use.

Bob Goff’s wonderful book title claims LOVE DOES. He’s telling us that LOVE is an action verb, not a feeling. When we love, we do something about it.

What about some others?

Forgiveness Does. Grace Does. Justice Does.

Of course we pray. And then we do something about it, and trust God for the outcome.

Hope Does.
