My friend Phil takes a little boy fishing occasionally.
They eat sandwiches and laugh and talk about stuff. I’m sure they even catch a few fish, though I don’t think that matters so much.
What if Good isn’t a big, overwhelming, impossible-to-achieve abstract notion? What if Good isn’t something for God to accomplish in the grand sweep of history, sometime in the future?
What if Good is as simple as a guy spending time with a kid?
Often it seems we’re all wrapped up in Good and Evil as enormous cosmic forces engaged in epic warfare. But on that scale, the battle’s over. Jesus won. Case closed.
It’s everyday Good and Evil that gets us. I’m more and more convinced those are simpler than we imagine.
The Evil of a Hitler and a holocaust happened because millions went along. They filled out the paperwork, drove the trains, baked the bread, answered the phones. They performed the nameless, faceless tasks. They chose not to speak up, to allow the lies and abuses in the name of some “bigger purpose.”
What if Evil is as simple as not doing the small thing you know is right, when it’s right in front of you?
I think Jesus is simple. Not easy, but simple. We make Him complicated because complicated lets us off the hook. While we argue about complicated we can avoid obedience.
I think Jesus says Good is as simple as doing good things. Like a guy going fishing with a kid, for example. And a whole bunch of folks doing that sort of thing, working together, trusting God for the outcome, adds up to a lot of Good.
Just like a lot of folks remaining silent when they see injustice adds up to a holocaust.

I like hanging around the FREEDOM TOUR community because they’re folks responding to injustice by doing the good things in front of them. They’re working together, trusting God for the outcome. When you do that over some time, it adds up to a lot of Good.
Building community. Sharing stories. Supporting a group of kids in a HOME OF HOPE. Sweating and sacrificing. Following Jesus together.
You can join us. Check out the FREEDOM TOUR website.
