A few days ago I told you about my friend Wayne and his influence on RICH’S RIDE.
One of Wayne’s distinguishing characteristics was his love of all things Jimmy Buffett. I just know he chuckled at the irreverence when we rocked the church auditorium at his memorial service with Buffet tunes.
Last week I found myself looking back at the ride, marveling at how quickly the weeks and towns and people had passed. I thought of Wayne and one of his favorite Buffet songs, CHANGES IN LATITUDE. The opening verse described my feelings.
I took off for a weekend last month
Just to try and recall the whole year.
All of the faces and all of the places
Wonderin’ where they all disappeared.
There’s value in remembering and recording what you learned. We’ll do some of that over the next couple of weeks. But toward the end of the song, the writer understands the importance of limiting the reflection.
Yesterday’s over my shoulder
So I can’t look back for too long.
There’s just too much to see waiting in front of me
And I know that I just can’t go wrong.
That’s God’s guidance.
Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing! Isaiah 43:18-19a
This wouldn’t be complete without one last bit of “Wayne wisdom” via Jimmy Buffet.
If we weren’t all crazy we would go insane.

Not much new to report on the ride. Some nasty staph and strep bugs apparently took up residence in my skin and took literally the notion of “be fruitful and multiply.” Hopefully the antibiotics are interrupting their little party and sending them on their way. Then I can get on my way.

Wayne had a major impact on a lot of people, me included. I think of him often.
Just to add to the Buffet list, how about “Math Sucks”? Still makes me laugh.
