Purpose

What do you think about this quote from our pastor?

You were placed here by God not to FIND your purpose but to FULFILL your purpose.

You and I were designed with meaning from the very beginning. But I don’t think that means what a lot of folks think it means.

I sometimes meet people who search desperately for their “calling.” They’re certain they must find the perfect place in which God wants them.

I believe you and I are called to follow Jesus, to live the sort of life he invited us to live. To seek justice and love our neighbors. To use what we’ve been given to serve sacrificially.

I know teachers, custodians, businesspeople, retired folks, medical workers – people in literally every part of society who live out that calling.

Bob Goff often says, “Find what you love to do, then do a whole bunch of that.”

Somehow, it seems to me like following Jesus while doing what we love sounds a lot like what God might have had in mind. But… it must be about something more than our own pleasure.

While we follow our passion, we need to remember – Seek justice. Love our neighbors. Serve sacrificially.

As the kids at the Home of Hope graduate and move on, I’m always fascinated by the paths they choose. Art, accounting, fashion design – a broad range of passions and interests from these young people who once faced a bleak future in slavery. Universally, they express a desire to impact their culture and help to change the conditions that once made them so vulnerable.

Their difficult circumstances have shown them that following Jesus is filled with joy, but it’s not always easy or comfortable.

In my safe, middle-American universe, I think I can learn something from them.
