Sunk

Imagine your boat is floundering.

The boat will sink, everyone’s gonna drown, unless you lighten the load. Someone suggests getting rid of the heavy anchor.

“We can’t! The anchor was very expensive.”

It’s an example of a persistent phenomenon known as the sunk cost fallacy. Same reasoning explains why we sit through a boring movie or concert (expensive tickets) or eat too much at a buffet (paid for all the food).

Can’t get rid of unworn clothes or other unused clutter (all that money)? Can’t dump that toxic relationship (all those years of friendship)?

Chasing sunk costs is a sure way to multiply poor decisions and throw good money, time, and effort after bad. Ever continued a floundering program because you’ve already got too much invested to turn back now?

FREEDOM TOUR planners aren’t immune to this very human temptation. As we plan for 2023, we’re working to free ourselves from the entanglements of sunk costs.

Stuff we’ve already bought. Things we’ve done forever. Those can inform our choices without driving them.

It’s exciting to begin fresh, free from the worry of sunk costs.

I kind of think that’s how Jesus wants us to operate.

Free. Light. Looking forward.
