Accountability And Justice

Seek justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly. Micah 6:8

Some thoughts:

  • Justice requires restoration – setting things right. Often, only God can provide true justice. We’re asked to seek justice, to do our part to move things in that direction.
  • Accountability requires accepting the consequences of one’s actions. Accountability matters – a lot. But accountability isn’t justice.
  • Human systems can and should insist on accountability.
  • Neither justice nor accountability has anything to do with punishment. Humans often get that wrong.
  • Walk humbly. When someone’s held accountable, I don’t feel like celebrating. Instead, I think we ought to look for ways to avoid repeating the problem.

We seek justice for the kids at the HOME OF HOPE.

True justice would mean restoring their broken lives and families. True justice would mean allowing them to grow up happy and liberated from the horrible baggage of their past, from the scars of trauma and poverty. On our own, we can’t do that. No one can, because true justice is God’s work.

But we can act justly and move in that direction. We can help with food, shelter, education, counseling, and other support. We’ll never set things completely right on this side of heaven. But we can help our kids have a chance at a better, more just, life.

Seek justice. Love mercy. Walk humbly.
