Do you feel like really bad things mostly happen somewhere else?
Most mornings during the winter, Becky does an indoor spin class. She enjoys the community, sweating with others when they can’t ride outdoors.
A while back the teacher was kind enough to tell the class about the FREEDOM TOUR. As she explained the basics of human trafficking, the man next to Becky leaned over and whispered, “Do you think that kind of stuff REALLY happens?”
It’s easy to relate to his question. Human trafficking? Sexual slavery? That kind of stuff can’t possibly happen in a civilized society, right?
300,000 children can’t possibly be trafficked for commercial sex every year in America.
Human trafficking can’t really be a $9.5 billion annual business for organized crime in the United States.
Children can’t possibly be sold for sex on the Internet in the United States. That simply cannot be real, not in America, not in our cities and neighborhoods, in our back yards—can it?
As many as 36 million can’t possibly live in slavery worldwide. Not today, not when we’re so connected. That just can’t happen, can it?
Yes, it can. It can, and it does. And once you know, you have to decide how you’ll respond.
At the FREEDOM TOUR, we’ve chosen to partner with a safe house that serves kids. Occasionally someone asks why we chose to support this particular HOME OF HOPE. The simple answer is that someone we trusted said, “Here’s a group of kids who need your help,” and we said, “Okay.”
For us, human trafficking is not just an issue. It’s about a HOME OF HOPE for kids rescued from exploitation. We are passionate about the fight against human trafficking, but what really gets us excited is seeing individuals who have been enslaved experience freedom.
Instead of raising money to broadly fight “the issue,” we’ve chosen to build a relationship with the people at a specific safe house in New Delhi, India to provide care for children who were rescued from brothels.
We know where the money is going, and we know the children whose lives are being changed as a result of our rides.
As our campaign grows we hope to be able to partner with homes both domestically and abroad. In the meantime we will continue the journey with these specific kids who depend on our team and our support.
The kids in our HOME OF HOPE are no more or less precious to God than others. We support them, doing what we can, where we are, with what we have. For us, that’s riding bikes.
