When You Should Pick A Lane

pick laneI recall the first time I drove on a city freeway.

Kid from Iowa, multiple lanes, traffic zooming all around, signs pointing in all directions, drivers speeding and changing lanes from all angles. I felt overwhelmed and my mom offered some great advice.

“Pick a lane.”

She told me to choose a lane, drive with the traffic speed, and concentrate on my own driving. She wasn’t advising me to ignore my surroundings, but simply to narrow my focus. It’s a pretty good lesson.

The world’s filled with worthy causes. At every turn we confront an issue that demands our time, talent, or treasure. We can jump from cause to cause, issue to issue, group to group. We learn a little here, contribute a little there, but we end up feeling like the kid on the freeway. We’re overwhelmed, the traffic’s rushing around us, and there’s just too much going on. We’re busy, doing all kinds of good things, and at some point we can wonder if all the scattered effort really accomplishes anything meaningful.

If you try to see everything, it’s difficult to see anything. If you try to do everything, you may not accomplish anything. If you try to follow every sign, you’ll crash.

If you want to make a difference, you have to pick a lane.

Occasionally someone asks why the FREEDOM TOUR chose to support this particular HOME OF HOPE. The simple answer is that someone we trusted said, “Here’s a group of kids who need your help,” and we said, “Okay.”

We picked a lane.

Home 1For us, human trafficking is not just an issue. It’s about a HOME OF HOPE for kids rescued from exploitation. We are passionate about the fight against human trafficking, but what really gets us excited is seeing individuals who have been enslaved experience freedom.

Instead of raising money to broadly fight “the issue,” we’ve chosen to build a relationship with the people at a specific safe house in New Delhi, India to provide care for children who were rescued from brothels.

We know where the money is going, and we know the children whose lives are being changed as a result of our rides.

As our campaign grows we hope to be able to partner with homes both domestically and abroad. In the meantime we will continue the journey with the specific kids who depend on our team and our support.

We picked a lane.

Doesn’t mean our lane’s the right one, that it’s better or worse than others. The kids in our HOME OF HOPE are no more or less precious to God than others. You pick a lane, then do what you can, where you are, with what you have.

And trust God for the outcome.
