Who’s Watching?

On the recent FREEDOM TOUR, our team basically commandeered the patio at the Sonic restaurant in Trinidad–twice.

Friday we celebrated our century ride with cold drinks and ice cream. Saturday we returned for lunch following our summit of Raton Pass. Sixteen individual orders shouted over all sorts of laughter and stories of conquest, on a busy day in the middle of summer. It’s a wonder the poor servers managed to get anything right, yet somehow we all managed to get exactly what we wanted.

After the tour I asked team members to share stories that stood out or impacted them in some way. I received a wide range of responses, but this little encounter was pretty unexpected.

As we were leaving Sonic on Saturday, I overheard the high school age guy who was helping serve say something like “They are very nice” to the middle age woman server.

She simply replied, “They’re Christian.”

I’ve thought lately about the opportunity we have as followers of Jesus. A number of hot-button issues have placed religion in general and Christianity in particular squarely in the public eye.

Our response shows Jesus to the world.

What do they see? Love, service, grace? Anger, bitterness, judgement? Open hands or closed fists?

Hurry up with my food? We know you’re busy and we appreciate your service?

We had these great big crosses on our jerseys. Maybe there’s a cross around your neck a sticker in your car window. Perhaps there’s a tattoo, or your neighbor just knows you go to church.

Maybe it’s our Facebook or Twitter feed or as simple as how we hang out at Sonic.

Somebody’s watching us. What will they see?

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)
