How Do We Open The Circle?

circle chairsBecky and I visit a lot of new places in our travels.

As an introvert I’m sensitive to insider-outsider feelings. Regardless of words or size, I often get a sense about whether the circle is open or closed. I work at being aware and moving past that initial tingle, but it frequently proves to be pretty accurate. Some places are just bigger, less organized (and thankfully less brutal) versions of the popular kids’ table in the lunchroom.

It’s not my place to judge other groups, but a recent experience got me wondering–how open is the circle around RICH’S RIDE?

Becky and were talking about this issue and she raised an interesting point. If you look at these chairs, there’s only one way to expand the circle.

To expand the circle, everyone has to take a step back.

Welcoming new people requires humility, surrendering a bit of turf that never really belonged to you anyway. It means surrendering that prized spot at the popular kids’ table.

I’m looking at the chairs around RICH’S RIDE. I’m rolling mine back to make space for others to join, and I’m encouraging everyone else to slide their chairs back as well.

We’re a mission trip, not a bike ride. We step out of our comfort zone to serve others’ needs rather than our wants. We’re involved in something bigger than ourselves. For that, we’re willing to take a step back.

There are a few spaces left on the FRONT RANGE FREEDOM TOUR team. Application deadline is April 27. Don’t miss out on this chance to step into an amazing circle.

It’s gonna be a blast!
