The Circle Grows

phil and beckyYou move down the road by putting one mile in front of the last one.

It’s fun to imagine grand visions of big adventures, but the simple fact is you advance the vision and construct the adventure by stacking one mile on top of the last. And in the middle of winter when I’m accumulating miles without moving (on the trainer in the garage) it’s easy to wonder whether there’s really any progress.

Last week Becky and Phil met with some of Phil’s friends at a Denver investment firm to talk about the FREEDOM TOUR. Becky’s recap of the discussion was basically a list of questions.

How can we help?

Can our church host your team for a night during the tour?

Will you share this story at this gathering? And this one? And … ?

We know a church in North Denver…could they provide lunch?

How could we build this to help more kids?

So I asked Becky what these folks wanted in return for all this help (plus an extremely generous financial contribution).

Nothing.

That’s right, nothing. No logo on the trailer or jersey, no acknowledgement on the website–nothing. Whatever we do to express our gratitude, we’ll have to ambush them.

It’s remarkable to watch what happens when people catch the vision and step into the circle. They look around and wonder what they can do to put the next mile in front of the last one.
