How To Leave Space For God

raton 1 14When everything’s busy, how do we leave room for divine appointments?

On a bike tour there are about a million small details to think about. You can easily get to the end of each day, and the entire week, and not really remember much of substance about what happened.

We talk a lot about being aware of divine appointments, the people and opportunities God places along the route. If we want that awareness to happen, we have to be intentional about creating space for it. We create that space through routines and rituals.

Routines are the things that happen over and over, that give structure to what happens throughout the day. A bike tour example would be the way we handle safety when riding in groups.

We standardize signals, call out certain movements, point out obstacles and hazards. We want those to be second nature so we can enjoy the ride without compromising safety. This routine allows us to get important work accomplished while creating space to be aware of the non-routine stuff God places in our path.

Rituals are special activities we create and repeat as reminders. On the FREEDOM TOUR we begin each day with a ritual called Helmets Up. We gather in a circle, raise our helmets, and pray. The purpose is to remember our mission, why and for whom we’re riding.

Routines free your mind. Rituals focus your mind.

Dangerous and wasteful to confuse them.
