Once upon a time, a teenager acted out and made some bad choices in rebellion against a lifetime of abuse.
One group of people felt bad for her and resolved to pray for her.
One group felt bad for her but didn’t want her around because they feared she’d be a bad influence on their children.
One group felt bad for her and formed a small group to discuss what the bible says about such situations.
One group felt bad for her but figured it was her parents’ responsibility and it wasn’t their place to interfere.
One group felt bad for her and debated whether her circumstances were part of God’s plan for her life.
One group felt bad for her and asked church leaders to start a program for abused teens.
One group felt bad for her and thought the government should help.
One group wasn’t sure what to do. They asked about her dreams, and she replied that she was too scared and lost to dream. So they put their arms around her and said, “That’s okay. We’re a little lost and scared, too. Maybe we can find our way together.
“What if we take a few steps side-by-side, sort of help each other, and share our stories along the way?
“Come on. How about if we get started and see what happens.”

I might have been wrong. Perhaps it wasn’t an abused young person.
Maybe it was a single mother, or an addict, or someone suffering from mental illness. Might have been a homeless guy, or someone who’s been bullied, or a lady in a wheelchair.
Question is, which group shows up?
