Gators And Hope

Today’s blog is short. That’s because yesterday was a great day.

First, we completed our crossing of the Tamiami Trail—minus the stretch where someone decided they needed rumble strips every ten feet or so on the shoulder. I tried dodging around them, but the traffic had other ideas. So we’re now 474 miles along and starting our northbound tour of the gulf shore. Today we leave Naples and head to Fort Meyers.

I finally saw some wild gators today. They’re really eerie creatures. This one looked at me the same way I gaze at a nice steak, which was kinda creepy. I’m assured that the basic rule is “leave them alone and they won’t bother you.” Fine with me…I’m all about LIVE AND LET LIVE, especially when it concerns prehistoric creatures with big, sharp teeth.

While I was cranking along, God was at work through Becky and my friend Clark Osborn. When I reached the hotel Becky told me we were invited to speak to clients at the David Lawrence Treatment Center in Naples. Last evening I spoke to a group of folks struggling with the detox process, and this morning we’ll return to visit with those in their mental health center.

These folks know about hopeless. They know about giving up, about thinking it’s impossible. They need hope, the hope I found through people like you. Thanks for sending us to share this message with them. And to those who offered to donate books through our Book Benefactor program, thanks for helping us leave behind some books that might provide encouragement to people who need it.

After that session, we’ll head to Fort Meyers, where plans are in process for an evening speaking event at a church. Then Thursday morning we’ll speak to two different groups at Salvation Army shelters, with some others stuff still in process.

It’s busy. It’s messy. It’s fun. It’s why we’re here.

On a personal note, today’s Becky’s birthday. Her gift? Another day on the road, chasing me around, making sure I’m fed and hydrated. She’s amazing. I’m lucky.

Happy birthday, sweetie!
