Do You Think About The Reward?

One of the RECO clients tries out the handcycle

A reporter asked me what I expected to get out of this project.

I never thought about it in those terms. It’s fun, we meet great people, I get to ride a bike and spend lots of time with Becky—those are all cool side benefits, but they’re not why I’m doing it.

I can’t really say I expect to “get anything” out of it except the opportunity to follow a dream. I get to follow a God-inspired desire to use my gifts and passions to serve others and change the world.

You’re changing the world as well, in ways you’ll likely never see. Friday we spoke to about thirty men from RECO, the Re-Entry Program of Ocala for men leaving the prison system. Because of your support, we’re able to offer hope, encouragement, and inspiration to these men and thousands of others. Because of the generosity of our Book Benefactors we can leave books at places like RECO. Those books pass through lots of hands and touch many hearts. God will use them in ways we’ll never see. Check out our Book Benefactor program if you’d like to be part of that process.

Your generosity in supporting Convoy of Hope changes the lives of hungry kids. I’m riding 1000 miles. Those of you who agreed to donate 1000 pennies allow Convoy to feed a child for an entire month. That’s a significant impact from what most of us consider pocket change.

If you haven’t contributed yet, may I encourage you to consider joining this part of the project? You’ll never know the child you feed. You’ll never get anything out of it.

That’s not the point.

Note to touring cyclist: Google Maps cycle directions are in beta version for a reason. Do not go 20 miles out of your way to find the bike trail shown on Google Maps unless you verify from another source that said trail actually exists.

No explanation required.

Saturday we head from Ocala to Gainesville. home of the University of Florida. We’ll need to dodge a different sort of “Gator” for a couple of days. Becky worked her magic and found us a place to stay, so we don’t have to sleep in the trailer. I’m glad. Monte snores.
