I’ve always been a reader, but I’m not sure I ever understood the real power of a book until a couple of years ago. I spoke at the local detention center. I’d been there the previous year, when a local business sponsored our appearance by providing books for the inmates. I still recall how meaningful they found the simple gift of a signed book.
On our second visit a young man approached with a tattered, dog-eared copy of Relentless Grace. “I can’t believe I get to hear you speak,” he said. “Someone handed me this book on my first day in this place. Your story got me through this horrible time.”
That’s the sort of experience that lets you know God’s interpreting the words for you. But it also reveals the power of a book, the way it can pass through different hands and take on a life of its own.
