A Lamb Among Wolves

There’s something about riding in unfamiliar places.

This morning I took off from our hotel on a training ride through the countryside south of Indianapolis. I had a general idea where I was headed, but didn’t know what the roads would be like, how much traffic I’d encounter, or what kind of terrain I’d face.

I kind of enjoy the uncertainty. After cranking miles and miles on the same trails and roads around home, it’s fun to “not know” what’s around the next corner or over the next hill. It’s interesting to roll into small towns, check out the businesses and signs advertising summer celebrations.

It feels a little like being sent out (Luke 10) like a lamb among wolves, without purse or bag or sandals. There’s a sense of letting go of predictability and control, trusting that somehow it’ll all work out. I don’t do that enough.

I don’t want to make this sound bigger than it is. Help’s always a phone call away, so I’m not exactly wandering into uncharted wilderness. But for a guy in a wheelchair who lives mostly in a safe, controlled environment, it’s a big step.

I wonder if we’d all benefit from stepping into the unknown once in a while. I wonder if we see things a little more clearly, and maybe get a little closer to Jesus, when we’re a little less in control.

    Should have read
Don’t let not being able to some things keep you from doing what you can do.

I enjoy each of your updates and we are praying for your ride!
I remember your quote about having a handicap
“Don’t let what you can do keep you from doing what you can do ”
It has helped me get up and do what I can many times.
You are a blessing—Enjoy the day, the way, and God’s amazing sustaining presence each pull of the way.

    Rich,
I know that you will find the beauty in people and the environment around you on your venture. I am reminded of the Family Circus cartoon as the children go throughout the neighborhood (depicted by dotted lines) on wonderful adventures, while all the while knowing where they left from and where they are headed to.
Our community is healing with much needed rain and lower temperatures. As I write this, the earth is reseeding itself and so are the spirits of the people affected by nature’s course of events.
Thinking of you and praying for your safety,
    Cheri

Cheri–that’s a great image…the earth is reseeding itself. God’s taking care of things. Nice.
