No Fair!

I gave up a long time ago on expecting life to be fair. It’s not, and that’s just the way it is.

However, some things just go beyond what’s reasonable.

As we get older, we all learn to accept certain limitations. We may not like them, we may not think they’re fair, but we live with them because we don’t really have much choice.

So the fact that most of my scalp is now exposed doesn’t really bother me.

But when you ride a bike 3-4 hours per day in a state covered in constant sunshine, you get a lot of sun on your head.

Tried sunscreen; too much sweat. I get lots of rays hitting my formerly hair-protected head.

And when you wear a bike helmet, that sunshine doesn’t cover your head evenly.

See the problem?

My poor bald dome is tanned in stripes and spots.

Some things just aren’t fair!

    Rich,

Thanks for your inspiring take at our Rotary meeting. It was great to meet you, your bride, Monte, and that fantastic bike!

I, too, am “follicly challenged” and had the sunscreen-on-the-head-sweats-into-the-eyes problem. I am experimenting with a (potential) solution this weekend: wearing a moisture wicking skull cap under my helmet. I’ll let you know how it goes. I’m very optimistic.

I’ll be anxious to hear the results of your trial. And I truly enjoyed the time with your group. You folks have a lot of fun.

Took the first ride with the skull cap yesterday on a stretch of the Glenwood Canyon bike trail from Hanging Falls to Dotsero. It worked very well. You definitely notice the slight thickness of the cap under the helmet, but it is not unpleasant.

The theory is elegantly simple. The cap is made of CoolMax so it wicks moisture away from the skin and evaporates it through the vent holes in the helmet and through a cloth “tail” that hangs out the back.

Today my wife an I will be doing about 40 miles on the Rio Grande Bike Path from Carbondale towards Aspen. I’ll give you another report after this longer test.

By the way, if you want to see what I’m talking about, here’s a link to the REI page: http://www.rei.com/product/697116/headsweats-coolmax-shorty-hat
