Sharing A Story

I’m not a preacher.

It’s not my place to tell you, or anyone else, what following Jesus ought to look like.

Not the best picture, but it offers some scale of what US Hill was like.

When I share stories like climbing US Hill outside Taos, I’m following Dick Foth’s guidance – A dream worth following has to be a story worth sharing.

My hope when I share my story is that you will find some bits of inspiration. As another wise friend often says – Take what you need, leave the rest.

I’ve been thinking about my recent temptation to revert to an easy, safe version of following Jesus. Maybe I’ve sacrificed enough, cranked enough long, difficult miles. Maybe it’s time to just attend church, listen thoughtfully, and let go of the work involved with leading The FREEDOM TOUR.

Gotta admit, there are times that sounds nice. Then, Jesus and I have a conversation. He reminds me – I have one life, one opportunity to make a difference. And I can’t do that sitting on the porch.

Becky and I have been blessed with this gift of an amazing community, people who want to surround the kids at the Home of Hope with love and generosity. It’s our opportunity to make a small difference.

I said earlier I hope you find inspiration. To me, that means you might feel prompted to feel or do something, perhaps something different, something outside your comfort zone, something you might not have done otherwise.

It doesn’t have to be as extreme as our friend Ed. Several years ago, after hanging around the edges of our community, he bought a bike (in his mid-70’s). Now, in his 80’s, he rides a couple thousand miles each year.

Most people won’t do that. But I’ll close with something I’ve said before:

If an old, bald, crippled guy can crank a bike up an “impossible” hill, what can you do?
