Yesterday I talked about judging people based on the buckets in which we place them.

I was talking about myself, but I suspect I’m not alone. And today I have one particular bucket in mind.
“Bureaucrat.”
Anything pop into your head?
I’ve told you for the past few months about our struggles with the permit process. Well, I can finally report that both city and county permits have been secured. And I would like to talk a bit about the process.
Since January, we’ve encountered a number of civil servants in several jurisdictions. These folks are enforcing rules they didn’t create, in some cases rules they don’t agree with.
Without exception, the people we encountered have been kind, helpful, and understanding. They’ve patiently answered incessant questions and done all they could to help us be successful.
I can’t express how grateful I am for the folks that helped us navigate this process. They are, from my perspective, true “servants” who care about those they serve.
I don’t like or agree with a few of the rules we had to follow. I’m confident there will be an opportunity to discuss changes with decision-makers in the coming months. I have a sense that we’ll be able to find common sense solutions that work for everyone.
I haven’t learned anything new from this experience. I HAVE been reminded of how important it is to treat people with kindness and respect, and not to judge them based on the buckets in which I may have placed them.
I don’t know the circumstances someone else is dealing with.
I do know things go better when I let go of my sarcasm and assume everybody is doing the best they can.
