Tricky Thoughts

Yesterday’s question: What do you think about – when you think about God?

It’s tricky… because we know there are good answers, and responses that might be a bit less desirable. And we’re not all that great about being honest about our own deepest thoughts.

As soon as I’m aware of the question, there’s this temptation to finagle the answer. To try to sound more righteous than I really am. To display some sort of admirable false humility.

Like I said – it’s tricky.

But, as I ponder, I still think it’s an important question to ask ourselves. Perhaps, like me, you’ll see some changes over time.

An example – I used to perceive God as some sort of cosmic gumball machine. His primary activity was responding to us (me). I could control the output by my input. Good stuff in = good stuff out.

I could go on, because I used to think lots of silly things. Now, I probably think other silly things.

I’m grateful for grace.

The point isn’t to expose my goofy ideas. Rather, I hope this will encourage you to examine honestly the important question of what you think about when you think about God.

I know one thing for sure: my thoughts aren’t God’s thoughts. Whenever I’m certain I have it figured out, it’s a sure sign I should stop and have a conversation with Jesus.

Next time… my thoughts, God’s thoughts, and the Home of Hope.
