What’s The Point?

Last time I asked if you think of “freedom from… or freedom to…”

Of course, it’s a false choice. Jesus clearly offers “freedom from…” Through Him, we’re free from guilt, free from the burden of knowing we’re doomed by our mistakes.

The question is, to me, what’s the point of “freedom from…?” Do we stop there and celebrate the broken chains?

“Freedom from…” carries responsibility – the responsibility of “freedom to…”

Freedom to speak for the marginalized.

Freedom to build longer tables rather than higher walls.

Freedom to seek justice.

We drink from wells we did not dig.

Don’t know about you, but it’s awfully easy for me to start pretending I’m somehow responsible for the remarkable blessings in my life.

I hope I keep coming back to the knowledge that none of this belongs to me. On my own, I can’t imagine what dark corner I would still be sitting in.

You and I were given the free, undeserved, unearned gift of “freedom from…”

What if we take advantage of “freedom to…” and use our gifts to serve and make a difference in the world?
