“Doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing.”
Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan shared this quote in a speech last week. He showed this photo of a reminder he’d given to his son, Baylor, some time ago.
If you don’t follow politics closely (good for you!) let’s just say the last few months have been “turbulent” for Duncan and his family. In advance of the speech, delivered in difficult circumstances, Baylor texted the photo to his father.
A son encouraging his father, telling him he was proud of him for doing the right thing, even when it was hard.

I’ve heard similar ideas batted around, and frequently the conversation stops at, “Yeah, but how do we know what’s right?”
And then there’s a debate about who decides and maybe we should wait until Jesus speaks or at least until we’ve done a deep dive into scripture.
But, what if Jesus already spoke? What if we started with “Love God and love your neighbor as yourself?”
What if we did the Next Right Thing based on what Jesus already said was important? Is it possible that waiting and studying and thinking and debating are ways to avoid the simple, difficult, right thing in front of us?
I’m just an old guy who rides a bike. Becky and I decided a long time ago that the Next Right Thing for us was supporting one group of rescued kids in one safe house. We might have made other choices. I’m honestly not sure Jesus cares about the details.
Love God. Love your neighbor. Seek justice. Walk humbly.
