A Simple Commission

What did Jesus ask us to do?

He invited us to go and make disciples, right? And when we ask how we’re supposed to do that, He says, “Follow me.”

“Live like I did. Do what I did.”

Isn’t it really that simple?

We do all sorts of complicated theology, spend endless hours parsing the details of scripture, often to prove a point rather than to truly understand. I wonder sometimes if we’re just trying to avoid the simple, but very difficult and complex, commission he left us.

What if a lot of the activity that makes up “religion” is actually a way to avoid confronting “…go and make disciples”?

The other day I found myself asking myself that simple question in terms of the FREEDOM TOUR… are we doing what Jesus asked us to do?

So how do you make disciples by riding bikes? Well, if we do it right, then hopefully people see Jesus in what we’re doing. Not in our words, but (as I said yesterday) in our actions.

I guess it’s our responsibility to make sure we don’t get lost in the activity – the routes, the training, the websites, and all the other stuff that goes with FREEDOM TOUR events.

It’s up to us to keep the main thing the main thing.

To follow Jesus. To make disciples.

What comes to mind when you hear “…make disciples”?

More next time.
