A weird thing happens as we plan for next summer’s FREEDOM TOUR.
We look back and realize hundreds of people had a great time, nothing but praise and encouragement. And one or two folks were disappointed because something didn’t meet their expectations.
Guess which one I obsess over? Guess which one tempts me to change something fundamental or create a rule for everyone else?
I don’t think this is unique to bike rides.
I’m not suggesting we ought to dismiss critics or ignore critical comments. Listening and empathy matter – a lot.
But criticism can feel traumatic. It’s tempting to create barriers – rules, restrictions, whatever – to make sure the trauma isn’t repeated.
Sometimes, though, the barriers keep away the people you need to help you do the thing you’re trying to do. If you’re not careful, the barriers end up sounding a lot like Don’t Bother Us.
We can’t be everything to everyone. Better to just get on with whatever you’re trying to do and embrace those who want to help.
I enjoy the wisdom.
