The Fourth of July – in the U.S., a day to celebrate our individual freedom.
As a white middle-class American male, I inherited historically unique personal liberty. I hope I never take that liberty, and those who sacrificed to secure and maintain it, for granted.
However, these days “freedom” has a different connotation for me. I think about freedom in the context of the kids at the Home of Hope.
Of course I seek freedom from slavery for our kids and for all victims of human trafficking, but breaking chains is only part of the story. I think about freedom from all sorts of systemic oppression – crushing poverty, racial injustice, religious tyranny, political corruption.
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Jesus never sought political power. He could have defended Himself and imposed His ways on those who opposed Him. “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?”
As His followers, our freedom doesn’t come from nations or their laws. And our power doesn’t come from our ability to impose our views on those who don’t share them.
Our power comes from following His example, from demonstrating love, service, and sacrifice.
All the rest is just gongs and cymbals.
