“I’d do whatever it takes to keep my children safe.”
Most parents would agree. Their highest priority is their family’s safety.
Going further, most of us would agree about certain things. Better to be adequately fed than starved, better to be housed than homeless, better to be healthy than sick. We all want those basic things for ourselves and our families.
Better to be alive than dead.
Jesus proposed something radical. He said we should care sacrificially for the basic needs of others. Even those who aren’t like us. Even our enemies.
I can’t follow Jesus and be okay with the suffering of others.
Following Jesus doesn’t mean I can solve it all. Doesn’t mean I should feel guilty about what’s beyond my influence.
For me, following Jesus means doing what I can, where I am, with what I have. It means sacrifice.
It means sacrificing my rights and caring more about what’s right. Not just for me and my family.
For everyone created in God’s image.

When Becky and I first learned about the horrors of modern human slavery, we decided we needed to do something. Because there’s another thing about which most of us would agree.
Better to be free than a slave.
Not just for me and my family, but for everyone created in God’s image.
