Hang around church very long and you’re sure to hear about “God’s plan.”
Classes, sermons, podcasts, books – there’s an entire cottage industry devoted to tracing His plan throughout history, interpreting current events and predicting future event based on His plan. Seems like a big chunk of that cottage industry is devoted to a debate about the details of the plan.
It’s as if you can’t follow Jesus until you know where you’re going.
I’ve absolutely no question that God has a plan for the universe and for you and me. The entire arc of scripture makes that clear.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph 2:10
There’s a big space between knowing a plan exists and knowing its details.
What if the plan is simply “trust”? What if we’re not supposed to spend our time trying to figure out the details? What if we’re supposed to do our best to follow Him, and trust Him for the outcome?
Do what He did. Love our neighbors – all of them. Seek justice. Walk humbly. Love mercy.
At the FREEDOM TOUR, we just ride bikes. We cycle to bring hope and freedom to the kids at one particular safe house. We don’t fuss about whether God wants us to choose a particular route or whether the right people are on the team.
We invite folks into God’s big story of justice for kids rescued from human trafficking. Then we create a space where they can find their own role.
We train because we enjoy cycling and because it’s healthy, not because we think training is God’s plan for us. People volunteer because it’s fun, because they believe in the cause.
