Plank People

I hate to admit it, but sometimes I’m a plank person.

Jesus said I should take the plank out of my own eye before fussing about the speck in another’s eye. That’s hard. I’d rather point out your imperfections than confront my own.

Plank people are like sight-impaired eye surgeons. They think they’re helping, but they’re blind to damage they cause and the pain they inflict on others.

The FREEDOM TOUR community is amazing, a committed group of cyclists and volunteers from a wide variety of backgrounds. We’re in lots of different places on our journey.

Bring folks together like that, mix in the stress of a bike ride and all the logistics – there’s gonna be disagreement and frayed feelings. It’s inevitable.

When that happens, plank people gossip, blame others, point fingers.

Jesus’ message, I think, might be about peacemaking. If we’re all busy cleaning up our own eyes, we’ll have a lot less time to harm others.

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
