We are creatures of story.
We remember stories. We dream stories. We pass our culture through stories. As much as we wish to be driven by data and facts, every marketer and politician knows behavior is shaped by stories.
The bible is a collection of stories designed to reveal the long arc of God’s big story. You and I are invited to learn what we can of who He is – and then to find our place within that story.
For me, that’s where it gets difficult. I’m an old, bald, broken guy who often feels like I don’t have a lot left to offer. It’s hard for me to trust that there’s really a role for me in this story.

I think I hear a paraphrase of God’s response to Job: You weren’t around when I formed the universe. You can’t see what I see.
Trust me.
Job repented. He trusted God, and we’re left with a question.
Will we trust God when we don’t understand?

I know the story. I get the lesson. I’m supposed to trust God.
I can say the words. I can say I trust that there’s still a role for me in God’s story. But it sure doesn’t feel true.
And that’s where faith happens. It’s easy to trust when everything’s sunny and bright. No faith required when it’s all going my way.
Once a man said to Jesus, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.”
That’s me. Maybe it’s you as well.
