“What are you doing for our kids?”
Five years ago. He was curious about the handcycle and our crazy ride around Florida to raise funds for Convoy Of Hope. Wanted to help us feed hungry children, but he hesitated when I mentioned the program was *international.*
Five years later I can’t tell you what he looked like or the name of the city or the specifics of our dialogue. Psychologically, that’s how important memories often work – the central event remains focused in crystal clarity while surrounding, less-essential details fade into the periphery.
So what made this guy, this interaction, so memorable? It wasn’t location, appearance, or any other particulars that embedded an otherwise nondescript encounter in my memory. I may remember nothing else, but I’ll never forget his question.
“What are you doing for our kids?”
I didn’t need to ask…neither do you. No doubt about what he meant by “our kids.” I remember his question so clearly because it’s impacted my thoughts about justice ever since.
Nobody can do everything. Sadly, there’s no shortage of needy kids, and I want every one of them cared for. So if someone chooses to focus on local needs, that’s great.
Since 2018, the FREEDOM TOUR community has donated more than $175,000 to support our kids, the kids at Project Rescue’s HOME OF HOPE. When we talk about “our kids” we mean something completely different than my Florida friend meant.
Our kids are special – not because they were born in the right place or their skin is the proper color. None of that matters. That’s not why we follow their progress like distant aunts and uncles.
Our kids are special because they’re God’s kids.
