What’s The Cost Of Being Right?

“Stone her!”

Some reading took me to the story of Jesus and the woman caught in adultery (John 8:2-11). I lost whatever else I was studying as I got stuck on this single fact: the Pharisees were willing to stone this woman—to death! Her life mattered less than their desire to trap Jesus and uphold their self-righteous legalism.

It’s a stunning contrast. The so-called religious people would kill to achieve their goal of stopping sin. Jesus willingly died a horrible death because He cared so much about her life–and yours, and mine.

The Pharisees wanted to be right because it made them powerful. Jesus loved people because He knew it worked.

Theology, sin, truth—they all matter. But being right doesn’t change lives or hearts.

Truth, without love, is simply noise.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 1 Corinthians 13:1
