Try Just One More Time

A while back I read a book called FAITH IN THE FOG by my friend Jeff Lucas.

Jeff’s story revolves around Jesus’ breakfast with the disciples after His resurrection. You may recall the incident—Peter, John, and some of the other disciples fished all night but caught nothing.

Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. (John 21: 4-6)

It’s a huge story with deep implications. Jeff reflects on his visit to that same foggy beach. But right now I’d like us to look at one simple, powerful lesson embedded in this breakfast encounter.

These guys were exhausted, discouraged, and ready to quit. Then an apparent stranger shows up, encourages them to try just once more, and they get the catch of a lifetime. The just had to cast the net one more time, but imagine how different the story would look if they’d refused.

How often do we work and try and sweat and follow a dream and then decide it’s not going to happen? And how often do we stop one step short of success?

You’ve cast the net a hundred times. Perhaps the next time you’ll find that huge school of fish.

You’ve auditioned for dozens of parts. Perhaps the next one will be the “yes” you’ve been waiting for.

A lot of doors have slammed in your face. Perhaps the next one will be the one that opens.

There’s more to the story than “Jesus loves you.”

Jesus also believes in you. He shows up when you’re discouraged and says, “Give it one more try.”

“Take courage. I AM. Don’t be afraid.”
