The biggest problem with change is…you have to do something different.
Last time I talked about stones and altars. I told you each member of the FREEDOM TOUR team wrote a burden on a stone and left it behind at the top of Raton Pass.
A note from a friend reminded me it’s not so simple. You don’t write guilt, fear, regret, whatever on a stone, toss it on a pile, and POOF! it’s gone forever. Then you fly down the mountain, eat a cheeseburger, and live happily ever after.
You knew that, right? So what’s the point?
Why bother with the circle, the prayers, the entire ceremony? If you KNOW it’s not going to change anything, what’s the point?
“In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”
The stones, the ceremony, aren’t magic. They’re intended as markers, reminders of a covenant between you and Jesus. When you see the stones and the pictures, you remember. and hopefully renew the promise.
You and I are works in progress. There are no quick, easy painless paths to long-term change. We stand in a circle because in community we can encourage each other, because we’re stronger together than alone.
My friend is right. We left stones at the top of the mountain. We built an altar, a reminder. When we see the stones, we’ll remember.
Step by step on our journey with Jesus…we’ll change.
