Three and a half years ago, Becky and I hung up a sign.
We invited folks to join us on a 500-mile bike ride. We really didn’t know what we were doing and we had no idea what would happen. We had a dream and decided to trust God for the outcome.
A handful of trusting folks accepted our invitation, and FRONT RANGE FREEDOM TOUR was born. Somehow that initial team made the trek from Cheyenne to Raton Pass, an amazing community began to form.
Fast-forward to last Saturday–nearly 60 cyclists and a small army of volunteers created an incredible one-day ride called FREEDOM TOUR Prologue 2016. Some folks rode 60 miles, some cranked 30, and we all had a blast.
I looked around at the smiles, the jerseys, the t-shirts, the range of people involved and the countless hours of effort they represented, and I remembered that first homemade sign. And I thought to myself, “You just never know.”
When you do what you can, where you are, with what you have–and trust God for the outcome–you just never know.
I wouldn’t have imagined a day like this, people coming together around a common purpose with strangers and leaving as new friends.
I wouldn’t have imagined seeing FREEDOM TOUR jerseys all year round or hearing stories of how the message impacts others on the road.
I wouldn’t have imagined the number of riders who get a bit dreamy-eyed and wish they could join the 500-mile tour. I get it–not everyone can take nine days away from family and jobs. But I feel bad for them.
In 5 days, FRONT RANGE FREEDOM TOUR ’17 will begin. Twenty of us will gather in a spirit of shared sacrifice around a common purpose. We’ll cycle 500 miles to support 22 kids rescued from human trafficking.
We have lots of plans, but we’ll begin each day with HELMETS UP! as a reminder that we’re not in charge. This thing belongs to Jesus, and when you follow Him, you just never know what might happen.
