Equity

Happy Monday!

In memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. let’s consider today’s word-of-the-week…

EQUITY

MLK-786x1024Dr. King spoke about justice, which is often equated with equality.

Perhaps we should focus more on the notion of equity.

I’m not sure how we generate equality in a diverse culture. Different abilities and passions. Different nations, backgrounds, traditions. City folks or rural folks. Even if it were possible, why would we try to stir this incredibly beautiful human mess, which God created, into some sort of boring homogeneous “equality”?

What we really seek, what Dr. King sought, is equity, which is about fairness or impartiality. Equity doesn’t seek indistinguishable players; it seeks a fair, level playing field.

Dr. King had a dream that his “four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”

I’m pretty sure he didn’t expect their skin color to change. Equity means their character matters more.

It’s MLK Day…In Dr. King’s honor, where can we make things a bit more equitable?

Have a great week.
