Our tour has no unsung heroes.
We do have lots of folks working hard to move this team down the road. A few of them get to wear bike jerseys; many others do less visible but no less vital tasks.
These folks from Brighton United Methodist Church opened their doors and hearts to make our first night on the road truly memorable.
On a very hot day, they met riders five miles out with cold drinks and signs of welcome and encouragement. They provided a wonderful dinner and root beer floats for an evening snack. Then they showed up bright and early the next morning and cooked a hot breakfast to send us on our way!
Pastor Joel Kershaw, his wife Raven, super volunteer LaVeta, and all the folks at BUMC are incredible partners of this unlikely journey. Some are behind the scenes, but nobody’s unsung.

When you’re with a group of people in close quarters 24/7 for 9 days, things occasionally get a little goofy.
We line our bikes up inside at night.
Yesterday morning Irene went to get her bike ready for the day’s ride. She discovered that she was going to have a bit of trouble inflating the tires on her fancy new pink bike.
At least she still has her helmet.
Later in the day the team encountered their first serious obstacle.
Denver’s trails were mostly clear and beautiful, but one patch of deep water tested their portage skills. Thankfully, no one drowned.
To end the evening, Irene handed out Beanie Babies to each team member following devotions.
I’ll let you examine each animal and wonder how she chose each to fit each of us.
Like I said…even on a serious mission trip, things get a little goofy. We work hard, we play occasionally, and we love each other a lot.
What could be better than that?
