This thing you’re doing–it goes by fast.
You’re reading this on Thursday of the FREEDOM TOUR. We planned for months, anticipated this week and what it might be like, looked forward to the start with incredible excitement.
And suddenly, it’s Thursday. Five days and 310 miles are already behind us. Four generous overnight hosts, five days of memories and hard work and laughter.
Snap! Just like that.
I’ve done a bunch of these rides, alone and with teams, and I’ve learned not to wish away a single moment. It’s easy to say I can’t wait to get this done because it’s hot or difficult, but you only have this many days, this many hours, this many miles…and then it’s over. And if you hurry past some of it or close your eyes and grit your teeth to just get it done, you’re never going to get those miles and moments back.
A week from now you might wonder what happened to all those miles. Somewhere down the road you might wish you could have them back, but it doesn’t work that way. You enjoy them or dread them, and then they’re gone.
So today’s Thursday, and by the time you read this we’ll be headed to Ordway. Another day, another ride, more moments and miles.
Maybe it’s important to savor those moments and miles, especially the hot, difficult ones. Maybe those are the places God teaches lessons. Maybe that’s where you bond with teammates. But I know for sure that those moments, those miles are the only ones we’ll get today. I believe they’re gifts from God.
I think He wants us to slow down, laugh a little, enjoy the sweat, and see what He puts in front of us.
Getting there fast isn’t the point. Getting there best is everything.
