People said that a lot at our table this weekend.
It was “Missions Weekend” at our church, and the lobby highlighted a whole bunch of missionaries and missions projects. People stopped, talked, and learned about incredible work happening around the corner and around the world.
Most of these folks are doing difficult, often dangerous work. They’re making personal and professional sacrifices to follow what they believe is God’s call.
I wandered around and listened to the conversations. Folks expressed curiosity and admiration, occasionally asked how they could help. I’m not sure I heard anyone say, “Wow, that looks hard!”
How come? Surely everyone understands that these folks are doing something much more difficult than riding a bike.
I wondered what was different, and after wandering and watching some more I came up with an idea.
At our table, folks were asked to sign up. At the other tables you could learn about the amazing work others are doing. You could pick up a pamphlet and nod approvingly. Maybe you’d visit a website, pray, or write a check–later.
At our table, the “ask” was pretty clear–join the team. There are lots of ways to get on board, but “join the team” is a call to act.
That’s hard.
