Crazy Thing Called Love

starLove confuses.

If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.
In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.(Romans 20:20)

Love confuses those who only know how to draw lines and fight. They may react, initially, with anger, hate, or resentment, but the bitterness is theirs, not yours. So it may feel divisive, at first, because “line drawers” draw lines. Love confuses them, and they don’t know what else to do.

Those “burning coals,” I believe, are the bitterness, but the point isn’t to make the other guy miserable. The point, hopefully, is that eventually he’ll grow tired of carrying around the burden of anger and hatred. And when that happens you’ll be there with another cup of water.

Love redeems. Love creates. Love erases lines.

Love transforms “us and them” into “we.”

Love merges our stories.

Love is Emmanuel–God with us.

It’s the Christmas story.

No more separation.

No more others.
