What’s Hope Look Like?

hope stoneHow do you talk about hope without talking about God?

It’s a common question as we travel and tell our story to audiences that aren’t always church-based. How do you tell a faith story without faith words?

I think the answer lies in one of my favorite admonitions: Always preach powerful sermons. If absolutely necessary, use words.

It’s not about the words. People tend to forget what you say–they remember what you do.

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. (1 John 3:18)

People respond to love and hope–not the words, but the acts.

I want to tell a story in which God is unmistakably present, not because I say it’s so but because His work is self-evident. I want folks to see in the story the basis for the hope I’m talking about. If that happens, it won’t matter what words I use.

I want to show through my story, my experience, what authentic hope and love look like.

Besides, any time I talk about hope, I am talking about God.

    Rich,

I love it. This is so true. I think we often get caught up thinking that God needs us to fend for Him with our words when He really needs us to love for Him with our actions.
