How A Dog Starts Conversations

FCA“That’s a great-looking dog.”

You’d be amazed at how many conversations begin like that. So we talked a bit about Labrador Retrievers and dog hair, but this guy in the hotel lobby had deeper questions.

It wasn’t long before he asked about the wheelchair, my injury, and the recovery process. He wanted to know about handcycle tours and dreams.

His brother was in an accident three months ago. Like so many folks we meet, he searched for hope.

So we shared a story of possibility, of community, of friends and family who refused to quit. Becky handed him a book and invited him to share it with family who need encouragement. He said he’d check out the blog.

But perhaps he was most comforted by scratching a pair of floppy ears.

These conversations aren’t accidents. They’re divine appointments, facilitated by an 80-pound people magnet.

In the last 48 hours we’ve met with the staff of a homeless family center in Green Bay, FCA students from a high school in Cottage Grove, and homeless folks in downtown Madison. I’m not sure three groups could be any different.

But they all related to hope, courage, and the challenge to dream a God-sized dream.

We focus far too much on what divides us. What unites us matters more.
