We meet a lot of interesting people on amazing journeys.
I’m not sure anyone will top the story of Sylvester and Nate from Long Road To Freedom. All they’re doing is cycling from Seattle to Key West, seeking opportunities to serve, and raising awareness about human trafficking.
Some other tidbits: they began the trip on July 5, after meeting on July 1. While they have a general path across the U.S., they don’t have a pre-planned route—they decide each day how far they’ll ride and where they’ll stay. If they discover an opportunity to serve, they stay as long as they’re needed. If they’re serving in Jesus’ name and perhaps finding an opportunity to talk about human trafficking, they’re convinced they’re following their call.
We hooked up with Nate and Sly because they saw one of our FREEDOM TOUR jerseys in a festival booth. They came by our house and we had a great time swapping stories with some friends.
Nate and Sly have big, God-sized dreams. Once they reach Key West they head home for a few months and study Chinese. Then they’ll teach in China for a while, preparing to walk the length of The Great Wall.
They’re just a bit crazy.
These guys would tell you they’re still refining their mission statement and funding strategy. Nate’s going to law school, Sylvester to graduate school to become a counselor. They know they’ve got stuff to figure out if they want to continue to follow God’s call on their lives.
But right now Sylvester and Nate are doing what they can, where they are, with what they have. Right now that’s riding bikes and serving where they find opportunities.
They’re choosing to write a remarkable story with their lives. I think that’s incredibly cool.
