When We Do Our Training Matters

training rideWhen do you train?

For most folks, training occurs later—which is the same as never. I’ll train when I have time, when the kids are older, when the job slows down. But later is a place in Fantasyland rather than a spot on the journey of life.

Some folks trained a while back. They got in shape, read the books, got the degree, did the mission trips, made the sacrifices—now they’re just coasting.

But in the real world there’s only one time you and I can train—now. We get stronger now, or we don’t. We learn new stuff now, or not. We grapple with unfamiliar ideas, challenge ourselves, expand our networks, seek justice, read the bible, follow Jesus—we do those things now, or we don’t do them.

That’s the nature of training. It’s not about what you plan to do next month and it doesn’t much matter what you did yesterday or three years ago.

Want to train to ride a bike? Crank a mile a day for a week. Increase to two miles per day. Soon you’ll be riding “impossible” distances. But you have to start—now. Later won’t work.

Want to become an expert on some topic? Read a book a week written by folks who know about it, starting now.

Want a deeper journey with Jesus? Invest some time in reading the bible or joining a small group or doing some meaningful ministry. Invite a mentor—a personal trainer—to help. And do it now.

The cool thing about “now” is—it’s always right here. If you want to train, this is the perfect time.

Training isn’t about the big result later. It’s about the little stuff, done consistently, right now.
